According to Channels Television, former APC Vice-Chairman Salihu Lukman has launched a scathing critique of the current National Assembly, accusing it of failing in its primary duty.
"Our lawmakers have abandoned their responsibility to the Nigerian people," Lukman declared. "Both chambers of the National Assembly are operating in a bubble, accountable only to themselves and the executive, not to the citizens they're meant to represent."
Lukman pointed to recent government decisions as evidence of this failure. "Look at how the fuel subsidy was abruptly removed or how the naira was floated without proper planning. Where was the legislative oversight? Where were the voices speaking up for ordinary Nigerians?" he questioned.
The political veteran didn't mince words about the root causes of this problem. "Over the years, we've seen the leadership of our legislature reduced to mere appointees of the President. Party structures that should provide checks and balances have been systematically weakened," Lukman explained. He concluded with a call to action: "For our democracy to truly serve the people, the National Assembly must break free from the President's influence and reclaim its independence. Only then can it fulfill its constitutional role as the people's voice."
