A Lagos couple, Ezimora Okechukwu and his wife, Ezimora Obioma, have been sentenced to 11 years in prison for assaulting and indecently handling their 15-year-old housemaid. Okechukwu received a seven-year sentence for indecent handling and three years for assault, to be served concurrently. Obioma was sentenced to one year of community service for concealing the crime.
The incident occurred on July 17, 2022, at the couple's home in the Abule-Osun area of Lagos. After the assault, the victim reported it to Obioma, who did not inform the authorities. Both Okechukwu and Obioma pleaded guilty to the charges, which had been reduced from a more serious offense to indecent handling and assault following a plea bargain.
Justice Ramon Oshodi condemned the couple's actions, calling them "heinous" and highlighting their abuse of power and moral failure. The prosecution noted that the couple showed remorse and had no prior convictions, which influenced the reduced sentence.
