Current Situation: Why Hervé Renard as Next Super Eagles Coach is a Blurry Affair

opera.com 2024/9/29

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is currently searching for a new head coach for the Super Eagles, following the resignation of Finidi George. Reports have linked former France women's national team boss Hervé Renard to the role, but the situation is far from clear-cut.

Renard's credentials are impressive, having led Zambia to Africa Cup of Nations glory in 2012 and overseeing Saudi Arabia's qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, his high salary demands may be a stumbling block for the NFF, which has a history of financial struggles.

According to Soccernet, Renard earns £345,000 (€400,000) annually as the head coach of France's women's national team, and his salary demands for the Super Eagles role are likely to be similarly high. This has raised concerns about whether the NFF can afford to pay his wages, given their history of owing coaches and players salaries and bonuses.

Furthermore, the NFF has not officially confirmed their interest in Renard, and other candidates are also being considered for the role. Antonio Conceicao, Salisu Yusuf, and Samson Siasia are all reportedly in the running, making the situation even more uncertain.

The Super Eagles' next match window is not until September, giving the NFF ample time to search for a new head coach. However, the longer the process takes, the more uncertainty surrounds the team's preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
