British leader Rishi Sunak conceded defeat Friday to Keir Starmer’s main opposition Labour party in the UK general election, saying, “I take responsibility for the loss”

“Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides,” said Sunak, as his Conservative party appeared heading for historic defeat to Labour.

The result ends 14 years of Conservative government during which five prime ministers ran the country.

Sunak became the prime minister on October 25, 2022, the youngest British Asian and the first Hindu to be in that position.

Group Urges Nasarawa To End killings

A socio-cultural group, the Alago Ikweyi Ggayi Development Union, has called on the Nasarawa State Government to urgently intervene in the ongoing killings following a land dispute between the Alago and Tiv farmers in the Keana Local Government Area of the state, before it degenerates into a full blown war across the state.

The PUNCH had reported that crisis recently broke out around the Nasarawa-Benue border communities housing the indigenous Alago and Tiv farmers in the area, leaving four dead and several others injured.

Speaking at a press conference in Lafia, the state capital, on Thursday, the President of group, Mohammed Oshafu, further raised the alarm over the alleged plan by the Tiv farmers to forcefully take over their ancestral lands across their communities.

Oshafu accused the Tiv farmers of bringing their kinsmen from Benue and Taraba dtates to Nasarawa State to foment trouble and oppress the peace-loving Alago farmers in the state, adding that many of his tribesmen were currently facing several kinds of humiliation in their farmlands on a daily basis.

I’m Surprised Nnamdi Kanu Wants A Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free Card–Laolu Akande

Laolu Akande, a former presidential aide, has expressed surprise regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s recent efforts to seek a political resolution rather than face judicial proceedings.

In a recent interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, Akande shared his insights into the ongoing legal and political complexities surrounding Kanu’s case.

“Nnamdi Kanu’s issue is very sensitive. Not only does it have implications for issues of law and order, but it also has more implications on issues of politics,” Akande said.

“There are those who say that ‘this man has been accused of certain things, very grievous allegations, and they will have to be proven in court.’ These individuals argue that Kanu is responsible for certain chaos or statements traced to him.”

However, Akande acknowledged the alternative perspective, which views Kanu’s situation as a political problem requiring a political solution.

“Some say a certain part of the country – the South-East – the leaders especially feel that this is a political problem, and we can sort it out by letting this man go free with guarantees that there won’t be any recurrence of what has happened.”

Both sides present strong, compelling arguments, Akande noted, but he expressed a personal stance favoring a judicial resolution.

“I think that Mr. Nnamdi Kanu should be bold enough to face these issues in court, but apparently, he’s not. With the Senators from the South-East now meeting the Attorney-General, I think we should see how it goes. From someone with the boldness and courage of Nnamdi Kanu, you would expect him to prove his innocence in court. Yet, I’m surprised he is seeking a political solution.”

APC Divided As A’Court Returns Pro-Wike Lawmakers To Assembly

The Court of Appeal, Abuja division, on Thursday, dismissed the ex parte order issued on May 10, 2024, by the Rivers State High Court, Port Harcourt, which barred Martin Amaewhule from parading himself as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The court also dismissed the decision of the state high court stopping the 24 members of the Assembly loyal to ex-Rivers governor, Nyesom Wike, from accessing the complex or carrying out any legislative assignment in the name of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

A three-man panel led by Justice Jimi Olukayode-Bada, in its judgment, upheld the appeal filed by a factional Speaker of the River State House of Assembly, Amaewhule, and 24 others against the Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo, and two others.

The state high court had barred the pro-Wike lawmakers from the Assembly based on a suit seeking to declare their seats vacant on the basis that they defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

The Amaewhule-led lawmakers had in December 2023 announced their defection from the PDP to the APC amid the political rift between Wike and the incumbent Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

On Thursday, the APC in Rivers State was divided over the appellate court’s verdict reinstating the pro-Wike lawmakers to the Assembly.
