Hundreds of APC members defect to PDP in Ondo

Members of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Ondo State on Wednesday announced their defection to the Peoples Democratic Party.

The defectors, who are from the 208 wards and in the 18 local government areas of the state, said they were ready to work for the candidate of the PDP, Agboola Ajayi, so that he could win the November 16 governorship election.

The defectors were received by the PDP candidate and the state leadership of the PDP at the Akure town hall, Akure, the state capital on Wednesday.

Welcoming them into the party, the party’s governorship candidate said there is a lot of suffering, hunger and anger in the land following the alleged maladministration of the APC-led government in the state.

Drug abuse: Tinubu promises to prioritise prevention strategies

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday said his administration would prioritise prevention mechanisms to curb drug abuse in the country.

Tinubu said investing in prevention is a “prudent way of safeguarding our future” because it “not only saves lives but also saves resources that would otherwise be spent on treatment and rehabilitation.”

The President gave the assurance on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, otherwise known as World Drug Day, on Wednesday, at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Speaking on the theme of the day, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” he expressed his support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in its fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking as well as its ramped-up efforts to prevent Nigerians from falling prey to the drug scourge.

Army deploys 177 personnel in Guinea-Bissau for peacekeeping

The Nigerian Army announced on Wednesday the deployment of 177 personnel for a peacekeeping mission in Guinea-Bissau.

The Chief of Operations, Nigerian Army, Major General Boniface Sinjen, made the announcement at the graduation ceremony of troops of Nigerian Company 3 ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau at Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAILPKC) Jaji.

Sinjen said, “Guinea-Bissau is grappling with political instability and institutional crises, which pose a significant threat to peace and sustainable development in the sub-region.”

He, however, said the Nigerian government, through ECOWAS, stood united with the government and people of Guinea-Bissau.

Tinubu has approved upgrade of Ibadan airport – Makinde

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Ibadan Domestic Airport, Alakia, to an international airport.

Makinde disclosed this on Wednesday at the Government House in Ibadan.

In a viral video on social media, the governor was captured as saying, “The President has graciously approved my request for the upgrade of Ibadan Airport to an international airport.”

The PUNCH had reported that the ninth Senate urged the Ministry of Aviation and other relevant authorities to upgrade the Ibadan Domestic Airport, Alakia, to the status of an international airport.
