According to Metro, Arsenal are nearing the completion of a deal to sign Italy international defender Riccardo Calafiori, who showcased his talent for the Azzurri during Euro 2024.

His absence due to suspension was notably felt as Luciano Spalletti’s team exited in the last 16 against Switzerland.

Despite a strong defensive record last season, manager Mikel Arteta is eager to bolster his backline. Jurrien Timber is expected to play a bigger role after an injury-marred debut season, but Arteta desires a left-footed center-back who can also cover at full-back.

Arsenal considered options like Jarrad Branthwaite, Murillo from Nottingham Forest, and Ajax's Jorrel Hato. However, Calafiori is seen as fitting their defensive profile and is deemed readily accessible.

Personal terms are reportedly settled, and negotiations between Arsenal and Bologna are scheduled this week to agree on a fee around £40 million, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Arteta hopes to finalize the deal in time for Calafiori to join Arsenal’s pre-season tour of America, featuring matches against Bournemouth, Manchester United, and Liverpool starting from July 25.

Simultaneously, Arsenal might entertain offers for Poland international Jakub Kiwior, who has struggled to secure Arteta's confidence since joining from Spezia 18 months ago. Although Kiwior showed promise at times last season, notably at full-back, he fell out of favor following a challenging display against Bayern Munich.

In addition to pursuing Calafiori, Arsenal have expressed interest in Wolves' goalkeeper Dan Bentley, initiating contact with the club regarding a potential move.
