Lagos, Nigeria - June 29, 2024: Human rights groups and concerned citizens have called on the Nigerian government to address growing concerns about the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives' alleged brutality and unprofessional conduct. Reports of excessive force, unlawful detentions, and harassment during investigations have sparked nationwide outcry, with many demanding urgent reforms.
Amnesty International Nigeria and local advocacy organizations have documented multiple instances of alleged abuse by EFCC agents, highlighting cases where suspects were reportedly beaten, denied legal representation, and held in deplorable conditions. “The EFCC's mandate is to combat corruption, but their methods must align with human rights standards,” stated Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has also condemned these actions, urging the government to implement strict oversight mechanisms and ensure that EFCC operatives adhere to professional and ethical standards. “Law enforcement must be conducted within the bounds of the law,” emphasized NBA President Yakubu Maikyau.
In response, EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren acknowledged the concerns and stated that the commission is committed to addressing any misconduct. “We take these allegations seriously and are working to improve our procedures,” he assured.
