Do we have a fearless judiciary? We have a Judiciary that is creating problem in Kano–Yemi Farounbi

According to the report from the Tribune, a Nigeria’s former Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr Yemi Farounbi raised concerns about the integrity and independence of Nigeria's judiciary, questioning whether it possesses the same caliber of distinguished justices found in other countries, such as Charles Warren in the United States and Lord Denin in the United Kingdom, or esteemed Nigerian jurists like L. Onyeama and Kayode Eso.

He highlighted issues within the judiciary, such as jurisdictional overreach, as seen in the recent Kano State example, and argued that Nigeria lacks a strong, reliable rule of law.

He asserted that court judgments are often influenced by powerful interests, and compliance with rulings is selective, with authorities only adhering to decisions that align with their own interests while disregarding others.

He said, "Then you talk of the judiciary, do we have a fearless judiciary? Do we have the caliber of Charles Warren of the American Judiciary in Nigeria or Lord Denin of the UK? Do we have justices of the caliber of L. Onyeama or Kayode Eso in the majority? No! we have a judiciary that is creating problem like we have in Kano, judiciary that will go out of their jurisdiction to pass judgement? So, we don’t have judiciary that is okay. Rule of law, do we obey rule of law? Do we obey judgements? They obey judgements they have packaged through judges of their own otherwise they ignore it."
