According to The LEADERSHIP, violence erupted in Bukuru, Plateau State, on Monday afternoon, following a clash between security operatives and local youths. The incident occurred when security forces deployed by the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) arrived to implement a recently signed Executive Order by Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

The Executive Order, No. 003, 2024, aims to control the "indiscriminate erection of buildings and shops" and enforce stricter traffic regulations within the Greater Jos Master Plan. However, its enforcement sparked tension.

Witnesses reported that the confrontation began around 2 pm when security personnel arrived at the demolished Kugiya Market. Irate youths, armed with cutlasses and clubs, reportedly resisted the operation, resorting to violence. Over ten vehicles parked near a supermarket were set ablaze by the youths, according to eyewitness Mr. Garba Tanko.

The security team, comprised mainly of police officers, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel, and JMDB officials, attempted to maintain order but were met with aggression.

This unrest highlights the challenges of enforcing urban planning regulations in Nigeria. While the Governor's order aims to address traffic congestion and potentially unsafe building practices, its implementation has caused frustration and anger among some residents.

Efforts to reach DSP Alfred Alabo, spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
