Nigerian governors are unfairly being criticized, according to Ogun state governor Dapo Abiodun. In response to a question regarding the sustainability of states, the governor made the remark in an interview with Channels Television. Recently elected as chairman of the Southern Governors Forum, the governor of Ogun state made the following statement: The governors of Nigeria are being unfairly held responsible for every problem plaguing the country. This is despite the fact that they are charged with leading their states, promoting security, facilitating investments, and taking care of their citizens. I think we would have to put this matter of local government management on hold for the time being since it involves constitutional concerns.

We are a nation that respects and acknowledges the separate but equal powers of the federal, state, and municipal levels of government. At this point in time, the position of the constitution dictates that the state House of Assembly is the body responsible for passing legislation determining the terms of office for chairmen and executives of local governments; this is the case with Rivers State. It is expected that they are aware when a tenure has ended.

It is not the responsibility of the governor of that state or anybody else to prolong that tenure; doing so would set a harmful precedent in our nation. "The position of the governors was that an elected chairman's term should expire, and the idea that it can be extended by just one day is harmful because it sets a dangerous precedent and abuses the democratic process."
