In an interview with AIT, Okoi Obono-Obla, the former Chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property (SPIP), alleged that he was victimized and forced to leave his position due to his efforts to investigate corruption cases involving high-ranking government officials.

Obono-Obla stated that the National Assembly, in particular, targeted him with harassment and scrutiny, setting up a committee to focus on him rather than supporting his anti-corruption efforts. He claimed that he was investigating some members of the National Assembly when the backlash began.

The former SPIP Chairman revealed that the pressure and harassment from various quarters became unbearable, leading him to advise himself to step down from his role. He expressed his disappointment in the situation, stating that it was not the right way to treat someone who was working to combat corruption.

In his words;

"I was being victimized. For instance, the National Assembly came hard on me because I was investigating some members of the National Assembly. A Committee was set up and the Committee focused on me and so there were lots of harassment from all quarters so I had to advise myself to leave. So I thought it was not proper, but I had to"
