A truck driver as well as two other persons inside the truck were on Wednesday afternoon, June 26, 2024, apprehended while dumping waste by the roadside along the Ikorodu Road in Lagos State and are to face prosecution over the act.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in the state, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development on his X handle, saying they were apprehended while dumping the waste by the roadside on the ever-busy highway.
In the post made by the commissioner, the men were seen offloading the waste inside a fully-loaded truck before some eagle-eyed officials of the state government saw them and apprehended them by the roadside.
The arrested men as well as the truck with the waste, as posted by the commissioner on Wednesday.
According to the commissioner, while the three men had been taken to the Lagos State Taskforce office at Oshodi for prosecution, the truck had been impounded and taken to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) office.
The commissioner wrote: "A truck driver was arrested this afternoon while dumping waste indiscriminately on the roadside along Ikorodu Road. The truck has been impounded and taken to Lagos Waste Management (LAWMA) office.
"The driver and two other persons were also arrested and have been taken to the Lagos State Taskforce office at Oshodi for prosecution."
Many residents of the state have expressed concern over indiscriminate dumping of refuse and waste by some unscrupulous individuals and this has caused some health hazards in some parts of the state.
