Spain came from behind to defeat Georgia 4-1 and secure their place in the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals, maintaining their perfect record against the Crusaders.

Spain, who dominated their qualifying matches against Georgia with an aggregate score of 10-2, began the match on the front foot. The Georgia defense, led by goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who finished fourth in La Liga for clean sheets this season, initially held firm. Mamardashvili made crucial saves against Pedri and Robin Le Normand, while his defenders bravely blocked numerous attempts.

Against the run of play, Georgia shocked the Spanish side in the 18th minute. A cross from Otar Kakabadze deflected off Le Normand and into the net, giving Georgia an unexpected lead. Despite this setback, Spain continued to press forward. Mamardashvili made impressive saves against Fabián Ruiz, Marc Cucurella, and Nico Williams, but Spain’s persistence paid off in the 39th minute. Rodri equalized with a precise finish from the edge of the box, compounded by an injury to Georgia’s Otar Kiteishvili.

Early in the second half, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia nearly restored Georgia’s lead with an ambitious long-range attempt. However, Spain soon took control. Mamardashvili saved a free-kick from Lamine Yamal, but Fabián headed in the rebound from Yamal’s cross to put Spain ahead. Spain dictated the tempo, and although Yamal's potential goal was ruled offside, Williams extended the lead with a solo effort past Mamardashvili.

Dani Olmo added a fourth with a classy finish, sealing Spain’s comprehensive victory. Spain remains the only team to have won all their matches at Euro 2024, setting up an exciting quarter-final clash against hosts Germany. Georgia, despite the loss, can take pride in their valiant efforts throughout the tournament.

Rodri was named man of the match for his pivotal role, including the crucial equalizer that shifted the momentum in Spain’s favor.
