Amnesty International has shed light on the harrowing state of insecurity in Benue State, revealing shocking statistics and urging immediate government action.

According to Amnesty International, over the past year, Benue State has witnessed a staggering 135 attacks across more than 50 rural communities, resulting in the tragic loss of over 2,600 lives. The affected population, predominantly women and children, has faced displacement, kidnappings, and incidents of sexual violence. The crisis has also ravaged the region's infrastructure, with over 55 schools and 23 local markets destroyed by armed assailants.

Furthermore, the humanitarian organization highlighted that 18 out of the 23 Local Government Areas in Benue State have been severely impacted by insecurity. This widespread unrest has led to the displacement of a significant portion of the farming population in areas such as Agatu, Guma, and Gwer West, leaving them without access to their livelihoods and exacerbating food shortages. Inflation has soared, with food prices escalating by up to 40% in the past year alone.

Amnesty International has called upon the Nigerian government to take urgent steps to halt the ongoing violence, thoroughly investigate these attacks, and ensure justice for the victims. The organization's data indicates that over 489,245 internally displaced persons are currently housed in camps since March 2023, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian intervention and security reforms.
