Aformer spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo has failed to rule out the possibility of joining another party.

In a viral video, the former Labour Party scribe said he would not rule out going back to “anything because change is constant”.

He also lampooned the Labour Party for what he described as the party’s inability to conduct “an acceptable national convention”.

“I don’t rule out going back to anything because change is constant, my own Labour Party is not impressing me. So what are you talking, assuming they continue in this trajectory where they cannot even hold acceptable national convention then you will tell me I will be there?” he stated in the video.

In May 2024, SaharaReporters reported that Okonkwo had suspended his relationship with the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party.

Kenneth, a Nollywood actor turned politician, described the last National Convention of the party organised under Abure’s leadership as criminal and corrupt.

He was formerly a member of the All Progressives Congress before he left in 2022 and teamed up with the then campaign of Peter Obi.

Obi was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election.

Speaking at the Safe Online Youth Fellowship Bootcamp organised by NerdzFactory Company, supported by Meta at the Youth Development Centre, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo said he was responsible for setting the country free from the bondage of immense debt, adding that he takes pride in the celebration of the 25 years an uninterrupted democracy, which started during his reign as democratic ruler in 1999.

“When I came in as elected president, I wanted to get debt relief because we were spending $3.5 billion every year servicing debt and the quantum of the debt was not going down. Today, I can say that I made Nigeria better than I found it from an economic perspective,” Obasanjo recalled.

“I found $3.7 billion in reserves, and we were spending almost all of that to service our debt. When I left office, we had achieved debt relief, reducing our debt to $3.6 billion while building up reserves to over $50 billion. I also facilitated an excess crude account worth over $25 billion.”

PDP challenges court order stopping Damagum’s removal

The Peoples Democratic Party has filed a counter to the Federal High Court in Abuja’s order preventing it from removing its acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

Previously serving as the PDP National Deputy Chairman (North), Damagum became the acting National Chairman after the court suspended the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.

There have been multiple unsuccessful attempts by party members to oust Damagum and appoint a substantive National Chairman from the North Central region.

The most recent attempt to remove him was during the 98th National Executive Committee meeting of the PDP in April.

Weeks after the NEC, the Federal High Court in Abuja issued an order restraining the PDP from removing its acting National Chairman.

In a ruling on May 3, which was publicised on May 8, the court barred the respondents from appointing, selecting, or nominating anyone to replace Damagum until the motion on notice is heard and decided.

The restraining order granted by Justice Peter Lifu was issued in response to a suit filed by Senator Umar Maina and Alhaji Zanna Gaddama in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/579/2024.

The South-West Governors, on Wednesday, agreed to strengthen farm security by creating specialised units within the Amotekun corps.

This was part of the resolutions reached at the roundtable on food security hosted by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Present at the meeting were the five Commissioners for Agriculture from Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo states: Ebenezer Boluwade, Bolu Owotomo, Olayato Aribo, Babatola Faseru, and Olasunkanmi Olaleye respectively, while Mr Emmanuel Audu, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture represented the state’s commissioner.

In his opening remarks, the Director General of the commission, Seye Oyeleye, said, “It is important to dispel unfounded rumours that the region has lost its capacity to produce its food.”

He, therefore, urged the commissioners to come up with the recommendations that the state governors can easily implement “within the next few months.”

Other resolutions reached at the meeting were geared towards boosting agriculture.

These include: “massive land clearing, enhanced security, and large-scale production of short-term crops like maize, sweet potatoes, and vegetables.”
