Vanguard reports that in a significant ruling aimed at promoting transparency and accountability, a Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered Sadiya Umar Farouq, Nigeria's former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, to provide a comprehensive account of N729 billion in public funds.

The directive follows a lawsuit filed by the anti-corruption organization, the Incorporated Trustees of the Centre for Transparency Advocacy, which sought clarity on the expenditure of the large sum. The funds were initially allocated for the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), which includes initiatives such as N-Power, the National Home-Grown School Feeding Program, the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Program, and the Conditional Cash Transfer Program.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, who presided over the case, emphasized the critical need for public officials to be transparent and accountable in their handling of public resources. The judge mandated Farouq to provide a detailed report on how the funds were disbursed and utilized, highlighting the importance of maintaining public trust through transparency.

This ruling comes amid growing concerns over the management of public funds and the effectiveness of social welfare programs. Transparency advocates and civil society organizations have welcomed the court’s decision, viewing it as a crucial step towards ensuring that government officials are held accountable for their stewardship of public resources.

The court has given Farouq a specific timeframe to comply with the order and submit the necessary documentation. Failure to comply could lead to further legal action or sanctions.
