Governor Hope Uzodunma of Imo state has urged youths of southeast to shun calls for protest against the government.

He alleged that proponents of such protests are enemies of the country who wanted to destabilise the national government.

The governor spoke in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state during the grand finale of All Progressive Congress (APC) campaign for local government election.

Tribute to WS at 90

The name Wole Soyinka aka WS evokes sundry emotions across the spectrum. Regardless of where one stands on the spectrum, we can all agree that Wole Soyinka is one of Nigeria’s most celebrated personalities, certainly Africa’s most iconic literary maestro and one of the world’s most influential citizens. Even though I know him to treat public celebrations of his birthdays with studied indifference and a hunter’s disdain, it is still almost unbelievable that WS is 90, given his frenetic pace of work and travels. And whether he likes it or not, this is one celebration he cannot stop!

For me, WS is not the unfathomable mystery that many perceive from a distance and he is not the mythological pantheon that exists in the realm of the gods in the imagination of many. He is a mentor, a role model, a father figure and a thought-leader with whom I have had the rare privilege of communing and sharing great moments of significant historic importance in my life.

Former President Donald Trump Saturday evening sustained injuries following a possible assassination attempt on him at his rally in Pennsylvania, United States of America.

Trump was whisked off the rally stage by secret service operatives with blood coming from his right ear and on his face after sounds of gunshot interrupted his speech at the Butler County event.

Already, the District Attorney of Butler County, Richard Goldinger confirmed to ABC News that the shooter was dead and a bystander killed.

A word of caution on regional integration

In the sprawling landscape of Nigeria, a complex web of ethnic and regional organizations has evolved like a mutating organism, adapting to the country’s shifting political terrain. From the Yoruba’s Afenifere to the Igbo’s Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and from the North’s Arewa Consultative Forum to the Niger Delta’s Pan Niger Delta Forum, these groups have become a defining feature of Nigeria’s political architecture.

Even in the governance ecosystem, various Governors’ and Parliamentary Forums and caucuses have all assumed regional focus, yet share a common goal of promoting economic growth and development. Their fragmented approach and duplicated efforts, I dare say, hinder progress and calls for concern. As they grow in influence, a pressing question looms: Will they fortify democracy and national cohesion, or fragment the nation further? The answer, much like Nigeria itself, remains a work in progress.

The unfolding developments surrounding regional integration efforts within our nation warrant careful consideration. The media’s portrayal of these outcomes is equally intriguing; not only do they downplay national unity and cohesion, they also accentuate divisions along the lines of our diverse ‘tribes and tongues.’ This should serve as a red flag for conscientious members of society, as it may inadvertently embolden insurgents and separatists to intensify their balkanization agendas.
