Coastal highway: Peter Obi inciting Igbo against FG, Umahi alleges

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has alleged that the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, was inciting the people of the South East (Igbo) against the Federal Government on the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.

Umahi said this while speaking at the event organised to compensate the affected owners of demolished structures to create a pathway for the project in Lagos on Wednesday.

He maintained that Obi had been a critic since President Bola Tinubu’s administration embarked on the project, describing it as a “job-losing one and misplaced priority.” Recall that Obi tweeted on his handle that Tinubu is creating more unemployment and destroying investments that paid taxes, as the Landmark Beach Resort, worth $200 million, was adversely affected.

He applauded the Nigerian workers for their contributions to the ongoing efforts by the government to save the nation’s economy, describing them as “an indispensable component of the nation’s engine,” in the bid to build a just and progressive society.

The President who gave the assurance during a ceremony to mark the 2024 May Day celebration at the Eagle Square in Abuja, said it is a fundamental truth that the workers are Nigeria’s backbone, even as he acknowledged and appreciated their hard work, sacrifices, and contributions to the nation’s stability and prosperity.

N70,000 not living wage – Gombe NLC

The Gombe State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Yusuf Aish, has urged the state government to ensure the full implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage as workers anticipate a living wage.

This came as he said that the recent minimum wage increment of N70,000 announced by the Edo State Government ”is just a gesture by His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki and is not a living wage.”

Aish made this disclosure in an interview with journalists shortly after the May Day celebration with the theme; ”People first”, held on Tuesday at Pantami Stadium. Punch Online notes that the N30,000 minimum wage has not been fully implemented across the state and local government workforce, making Aish seek balance and full implementation.
