Kenyans on social media have angrily reacted after learning of the amount of money National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula receives as airtime allowance per month.
As reported by Citizen TV's Stephen Letoo on Tuesday night, Speaker Wetangula and his Senate counterpart Amason Kingi receive KSh. 25,000 as airtime allowance following a gazette notice by the Salaries Remunerations Commission (SRC).
A majority of Kenyans were irked by the news, taking to social media to vent their anger. Some Kenyans wondered why Wetangula's airtime allowance is higher than what some Junior Secondary School teachers are paid as monthly salaries.
Some netizens said SRC's decision to give KSh. 25,000 as airtime allowance to Wetangula is sickening and a joke while others termed it madness.
"A JSS Intern earns 17,000ksh in this broke economy that politicians are singing the same "Economic Doom" going forward. But the Speaker of that "Not so Honourable House" gets 25,000ksh in Airtime Allowance," a Kenyan on X vented.
"Imagine a JSS teacher receives KSh. 17,000 a month while Wetangula's airtime allowance is KSh. 25,000 per month is truly sickening," another Kenyan on X wrote.
"We are joking as kenyans. Moses Wetangula's Airtime allowance is 25000 and Junior secondary school teacher is 17,000 on the other hand an MPs dental care allowance is more than the MCAs salary. Ndio maana wanauma taxes zetu kabisa," another Kenyan said.
Some Kenyans questioned why Wetangula cannot buy his own airtime while he earns a lot of money as the third most powerful person in the country.
"Why would someone earning basic salary of Kshs 1,208,677 still be given airtime allowance of Kshs 25k? Isn't that madness. That's enough to employ one gen Z," an infuriated Kenyan said.
