The controversial 2024 Finance Bill, which is opposed by locals, especially Generation Z, imposes a number of fees on Kenyans, for which U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has criticised the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The hard economic circumstances that the Kenyan people endure must be acknowledged as a result of the IMF's strict lending requirements. Congresswoman Omar posted a statement on her social media account on X stating that "These actions often have a severe impact on the impoverished and can lead to public protests against the government."
The administration was also criticised by the representative of Minnesota's 5th District for the murders of protestors and the destruction brought about by Kenyans who opposed the unfair tax scheme. "Reports of excessive police force and the use of live bullets targeting journalists and kidnapping protesters are distressing and must be addressed," Omar states. "The Kenyan government must disclose the whereabouts and conditions of protesters who have been arrested or disappeared." Along with listening to Kenyans' concerns through productive dialogue, the congresswoman asked the administration. As they critique the administration in this way, Kenyans participating in the rallies are urged to maintain their composure and the government is reminded to uphold their constitutional rights.
