Cobbler lands in prison custody after assaulting police officer in Lagos

A cobbler has been remanded in prison custody following his arrangement in court after he was said to have assaulted a police officer in the Lekki area of Lagos State, it was gathered on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

The Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police, Muyiwa Adejobi, who announced the development on his X handle, said the cobbler, 47-year-old Oluwaseun Jacobs, was arrested during the assault on the police officer at Chevron Roundabout in Lekki last Saturday.

According to Adejobi, the attention of the police high command was drawn to the incident and following the man's arrest, he was arraigned in a court in the state on a three-count charge including assault occasioning bodily harm and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

He said following his not guilty plea, the case was adjourned till July 8, 2024 for hearing, while the cobbler had been remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending further legal proceedings.

He said the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, expressed dismay over the attack on police officers and promised to ensure that the rights of officers are protected.

He wrote:"The Inspector General of Police hereby assures all officers of the NPF’s full support in situations where their rights are violated, noting that the Force would not condone such embarrassing situations.

"He emphasized that the safety of officers is paramount and runs with the fundamental rights of citizens, reiterating that the NPF will not tolerate any form of assault on its officers, and will ensure that those responsible face the full wrath of the law."
