So Because She’s A Judge, She Can’t Be Honored By Her Own State? — Gboyega Akosile Defends CJN Kekere-Ekun
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, has responded to a tweet that said judges should not join the public in celebrating.
The remark was posted on Twitter by someone after Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, was invited to dinner by the governor of Lagos State.
The person on Twitter wrote, "Mr. spokesman, you’re just being political and shying away from the truth. Judges are not to be frolicking and partying with the publics they hold the temple of justice trust for. It’s only their impartial and landmark judgments that speak."
This came after Chidi Odinkalu, a respected law professor and former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, recently expressed his concerns about the same incident.
He was concerned that Kekere-Ekun would go to a dinner hosted by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Odinkalu questioned the morality of the CJN's attendance at the event and voiced concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
He posted on Twitter, "I suspect someone will tell me Madam CJN's memory is wonky. If not, then how did she forget that the governor of Lagos State is a litigant before her Supreme Court Nigeria? How can she call younger judges to order when they fraternize in this manner, or she just plainly can't see it?"
In response to what was said, Gboyega Akosile questioned the reasoning behind the notion that a judge's accomplishments should not be recognized by her home state.
In frustration, he wrote the following on Twitter: "That’s according to you in Section 1, Paragraph 1 of your Constitution, abi? So because she’s a judge, she can’t be honored by her own state of origin for attaining a great feat? What’s wrong with you people?" Below is the tweet and response from Akosile.
