Nigerians Spent Alarming N16trillion On Generators, Fuelling In 2023 – Power Minister, Adelabu

Nigeria's minister of power, Adebayo Adelabu, has admitted that Nigerians spent a total of N16.5trillion on diesel, petrol, generators, and related servicing in 2023 amid the failure of the government to provide stable supply.
The hefty expenditure indicates the country's ongoing energy crisis, as many Nigerians continue to rely heavily on alternative power sources due to inconsistent electricity supply.
Adelabu made this known on Tuesday, at the 2024 Nigeria Oil and Gas conference in Abuja, where he disclosed that the formal power sector, including electricity generation, transmission, and distribution companies, made a total revenue of N1trillion last year amid the over N16trillion spent by power consumers in the informal sector.
The minister, under whose watch the national grid had collapsed several times and electricity tariffs had gone up, said, “If you know how much our people spend buying diesel, petrol, generators, and servicing them in a year; the last study we had in 2023, a total of N16.5trillion was spent on this in self (power) generation.

Workers at the Sumal Foods company (Yale) in Ibadan, Oyo State, have decried the Nigerian police's attempt to distort facts and evade accountability for the attack and killing of peaceful protesting workers on Monday.
According to eyewitnesses, the police fired teargas canisters and live bullets at the protesters, who were demanding unpaid palliatives, resulting in the death of three workers, including Mr. Phillips, a three-year employee.
However, in a bid to cover up the incident, the police have issued a statement blaming the company's staff for spreading false information about palliative disbursement, and while acknowledging one worker's death, the Oyo State command failed to take responsibility for the killing.
The workers, have condemned the attempt to falsify facts and seek justice for the victims.
Two killed, houses set ablaze as farmers, herders clash in Jigawa

Two persons, were reportedly killed and houses set ablaze in another clash between farmers and herders in Birnin Kudu local government area of Jigawa State.
A resident told DAILY POST that the incident happened, when herdsmen suspected to be invited from neighbouring states by indigenous herders destroyed farmlands along the route.
He said as a result, a clash erupted leaving many injured between the two sides.
Police spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to DAILY POST.
NHIA, stakeholders agree to hike tariffs for healthcare providers

The National Health Insurance Authority and stakeholders, have agreed on a new medicine and services pricing structure.
This was disclosed in a press statement issued on Wednesday, by the acting Director of Media and Public Relations at the NHIA, Emmanuel Ononokpono.
The agreement was said to have been reached at a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja.
The meeting settled for a 60 per cent increase in the capitation and a 40 per cent upward review in Fee-For-Service.
