Segun Sowunmi, a Chieftain of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that notable figures, such as Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, have publicly expressed their support for President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in advance of the 2027 election without being reprimanded by the PDP.
He voiced his dissatisfaction with the unwillingness of the party leadership to confront the urgent political issues that have arisen in Rivers State between the former governor and the person who succeeded him. Furthermore, he expressed his dismay at what he perceived to be a lack of principled decision-making within the People's Democratic Party (PDP). He cited the example of the party's selection of a former deputy governor from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as its candidate for the position of governor in the November election for Ondo State. It was brought to his attention that the recent actions taken by the PDP undermine his long-standing commitment to the association.
He said in an interview with AIT, ''Nobody is expecting us to be pretending as if we are blind. What is obvious cannot be opaque. People like Wike are saying they will support Asiwaju in 2027 and we can't caution them. We can't be saying that we have a complex situation that is even affecting one of our most important states which is Rivers State.
And people are saying we can't put our feet on the ground to address this matter. How happy do you think I feel that the Peoples Democratic Party has gone to Ondo to pick a former deputy governor of APC who when he lost the primaries the last time did not even wait to work for the party, he decamped to another party. So if the PDP wants to be a platform that is a cannon folder to support other people's party, then you shouldn't expect me to waste 25 years of my life in the party.''
