According to a report by Channels TV, in a commendable act of generosity, Abdulmalik Zubairu, the lawmaker representing Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, facilitated the mass wedding of 105 orphans.

These young individuals lost their parents to the ongoing armed banditry crisis plaguing the state. The ceremony was held on Saturday in Bungudu town, the administrative center of Bungudu Local Government Area.

Prominent figures from across the state and beyond attended the event, underscoring its significance. Mass weddings, a common tradition in Northern Nigeria, are designed to support families who cannot afford the financial burden of marriage.

However, such events have faced increasing scrutiny in recent years. Zubairu’s initiative aims to counter these criticisms by offering tangible support to those in need.

Dressed in vibrant traditional attire, the brides and grooms attracted the admiration of the attendees. One of the brides, 15-year-old Aisha from Bungudu, expressed her gratitude and willingness to marry her chosen partner. “It is my decision, no one forced me. I am thankful for this opportunity,” she said.

Halima, another bride, echoed Aisha’s sentiments, appreciating the support provided by the lawmaker. “This was my choice. We are grateful for this assistance and pray for continued blessings,” she remarked.

Among the grooms, 20-year-old Jamilu Adamu shared his positive experience, emphasizing his freedom in choosing his bride. “I selected my wife because we love each other. I will treat her well,” he affirmed.

During the event, Zubairu addressed the audience, acknowledging the severe hardships faced by orphans and other vulnerable members of his constituency.

He highlighted his ongoing efforts to improve the lives of his constituents, including the provision of over 5,000 scholarships in the past year.

“My constituents face numerous challenges, from economic hardship to insecurity. With God’s help, we have implemented projects to enhance their welfare. We have constructed schools and hospitals and provided scholarships. Today’s mass wedding is part of our commitment to support these young individuals,” Zubairu stated.

In addition to sponsoring the wedding, Zubairu provided each couple with essential household items, including beds and mattresses.

He also covered the dowry costs, amounting to N10.5 million in total. To further support the newlyweds, each bridegroom received N100,000, while each groom received N50,000 to help them start their own businesses.
