Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has asserted that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, remains a member of the PDP and will eventually return to the party when the time is right. Sowunmi, who previously vied for the governorship in Ogun State, emphasized that Wike's involvement with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is merely temporary, suggesting that the PDP views him as being "loaned" to the APC.
In a report from The Guardian, Sowunmi stated that the PDP intends to reclaim Wike since the APC allegedly struggles to find suitable individuals to serve in their government. Notably, Wike was handpicked by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve as a cabinet member, marking him as the sole PDP member appointed to the APC-led administration.
Despite controversies surrounding Wike's membership in the PDP while serving as a minister in the current government, Sowunmi asserted that Wike's allegiance lies with the PDP. Addressing the issue, Sowunmi remarked that Wike has been noticeably absent from APC meetings but has actively participated in various gatherings hosted by the PDP.
Sowunmi reiterated Wike's position, stating that Wike has openly declared his status as a PDP member while concurrently serving as a minister in the APC government. However, questions have arisen regarding Wike's loyalty, with concerns over potential conflicts of interest arising from his dual roles within opposing political entities.
Acknowledging the duplicity inherent in Wike's situation, Sowunmi implied that Wike's actions speak louder than words, as his consistent attendance at PDP meetings serves as evidence of his continued affiliation with the party. Furthermore, Sowunmi hinted at the PDP's intention to reclaim Wike, characterizing his temporary alignment with the APC as a loan arrangement that will eventually be reversed.
He said, "His Excellency Nyesom Wike has made it abundantly clear that he is serving in the APC government as the Minister of the FCT and he is a member of the PDP. Yes, there is a duplication there because we have our suspicion, is he loyal to us or loyal to them? How else is he supposed to prove his loyalty? We have never seen him in any APC meeting but we've seen him in PDP meetings. We loaned him to the APC, and by the grace of God, we will take our thing back since they can't find anybody good enough to work in their party."
