The North voted for Obasanjo and when Obasanjo was going, he returned power to the North–Shehu Sani

In a recent interview with The Sun, Senator Shehu Sani, a noted human rights activist and public commentator, provided insights into the political strategies of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Following a Sallah homage to former President Muhammadu Buhari, attended by Atiku and other Northern elites, Sani revealed plans to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's leadership in the 2027 presidential election. Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in both the 2019 and 2023 elections, is reportedly gearing up for another bid for the presidency.

During the interview, Sani discussed the political dynamics in Nigeria, particularly the longstanding practice of power rotation between the North and South. He noted that this tradition has been a significant factor in maintaining political stability in the country. He cited the example of how the North supported Olusegun Obasanjo's presidency and, upon his departure, power was returned to Northern Nigeria. This practice was disrupted in 2015, leading to the PDP's loss of power, which Sani believes underscores the importance of adhering to the rotation formula.

Sani expressed his belief in Atiku's potential to eventually become president, emphasizing that this would likely occur after the South has completed its current term of eight years. This statement reflects a broader sentiment within certain political circles that respect for regional power-sharing agreements is crucial for any candidate aspiring to the presidency. Sani's comments suggest that Atiku's chances hinge not only on his political acumen but also on the broader geopolitical considerations within Nigeria's complex political landscape.

He said: The North voted for Obasanjo and when Obasanjo was going, he returned power to Northern Nigeria and the attempt to breach the rotation formula in 2015, caused the PDP to be out of power. So, to me, I believe that Atiku can be president, but it is after the South has finished their eight years.
