The controversial 2024 Finance Bill, which is opposed by the public, particularly Generation Z, imposes a number of taxes on Kenyans. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of the United States has blamed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for these levies.
It's critical to acknowledge that Kenyans are currently experiencing extremely difficult economic circumstances in part because of the IMF's strict financial requirements. Congresswoman Omar made a statement on her social media account on X, saying, "These measures can escalate instances of public protests against the government and often negatively affect the underprivileged."
In a similar spirit, the congressman from Minnesota's fifth district denounced the government for the deaths of protestors and the devastation that Kenyans have seen as a result of their opposition to the harsh tax laws.
"It is alarming to learn about reports of police using excessive force and shooting demonstrators and journalists with live ammunition. These incidents need to be addressed," Ms. Omar stated.
"The whereabouts and conditions of protestors who have been arrested or vanished must be made public by the Kenyan government."
Additionally, the congresswoman urged the administration to engage in constructive discourse in order to hear Kenyans' complaints.
As they criticize the government in this way, Kenyans taking part in the ongoing protests are asked to keep the peace and demand that the government uphold their constitutional rights.
