The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara of violating the terms of a peace agreement mediated by President Bola Tinubu. During a media chat on Sunday, as broadcast by News Central TV, Wike expressed his dissatisfaction with Fubara's decision to take legal action after the withdrawal of an impeachment notice against him, which was part of the resolution reached during the presidential intervention.

Breach of Agreement

Wike explained that the peace talks, facilitated by President Tinubu, sought to resolve the escalating conflict between him and Fubara, which has deeply divided Rivers State. The president, according to Wike, outlined specific directives for both parties to follow to restore peace and stability. These included the withdrawal of the impeachment notice against Fubara and other steps to de-escalate tensions.

However, Wike accused Fubara of undermining the peace process by initiating court proceedings instead of reporting back to the president about any challenges in implementing the agreement. He criticized Fubara and his allies for acting unilaterally rather than seeking further guidance from the president.

"You go, withdraw the impeachment notice. You go, do this. You go, do that. The parties went home, and the assembly withdrew the impeachment notice," Wike said. "You did one, you did two, and then you sent people to go to court. Have you gone back to Mr. President? This assignment you gave—we've done one, we've done two, but we were not able to do three and four. Please, Mr. President, can you call us back to see whether we can find a solution to three and four, since one and two have been executed? Nothing."

Persistent Conflict

The rift between Wike and Fubara has been a source of political turmoil in Rivers State for several months. The disagreement has led to the emergence of factional Speakers and parallel Assemblies, with one group loyal to Wike and the other supporting Fubara. These divisions have further complicated governance in the state and stalled efforts to maintain peace.

Wike emphasized the need for accountability and cooperation in resolving the conflict, arguing that Fubara's failure to follow through on the agreement has jeopardized the progress made during the peace talks. He insisted that any difficulties in implementing the directives should have been reported to President Tinubu for further guidance.

Call for Compliance

Wike expressed frustration at the lack of commitment from Fubara and his allies, questioning their dedication to the peace process. He reiterated that the directives issued by the president were meant to ensure a peaceful resolution and that all parties involved had a responsibility to comply fully.

"If you are unable to fulfill all the directives, you should have reported back to the president rather than acting unilaterally," Wike stated, underscoring his belief that proper communication and adherence to the agreement were essential for resolving the crisis.

Political Implications

The ongoing feud between Wike and Fubara highlights the challenges of managing political alliances and power dynamics within Rivers State. As a former governor of the state, Wike remains a powerful political figure, and his conflict with Fubara, his successor, has created a divide within the state’s political landscape. The parallel Assemblies and factional Speakers further underscore the gravity of the situation and the need for a lasting resolution.

Conclusion

As the conflict between Wike and Fubara continues, questions remain about the commitment of both parties to the peace process initiated by President Tinubu. Wike’s criticism of Fubara's alleged breach of the agreement underscores the importance of dialogue, accountability, and adherence to directives in resolving political disputes. Moving forward, the involvement of President Tinubu may be necessary to revisit unresolved issues and ensure the full implementation of the peace agreement to restore stability in Rivers State.
