According to a report from Punch Newspaper, Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, urged President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and other detained freedom fighters. He emphasized that Kanu should not remain in detention, especially since the courts have granted him freedom.

Speaking to journalists in Onitsha, Anambra State, Obi called for heightened efforts in addressing insecurity, warning of Nigeria's potential descent into a failed state without urgent action. He criticized the continued detention of individuals granted bail by the courts, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law in a democracy.
