Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has urged for expedited investigation and legal trials for suspects to mitigate prison congestion nationwide.

Speaking during a visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions led by Hon. Chinedu Ogah to the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor

Fubara emphasized the need for efficient functioning of the Nigeria Police Force and the Judiciary to ensure prompt dispensation of justice.

Highlighting the impact of delayed trials on prison overcrowding, Governor Fubara underscored the importance of effective institutional operations.

According to Vanguard, he acknowledged efforts by the Chief Judge in reviewing cases and granting bail or pardon based on evaluations of correctional centers.

The Governor expressed optimism that addressing these systemic challenges would alleviate the burden of maintaining inmates on awaiting trial lists, reducing associated financial costs.

He also stressed the significance of integrating ex-convicts back into society responsibly, emphasizing the need for thorough evaluations to safeguard communities.
