In a recent interview with Channels TV host Seun Okinbaloye, Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), expressed his views on contemporary Nigerian politics, highlighting the actions of Honorable Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna state governorship candidate Nasir El-Rufai.
Sowore, known for his outspoken criticism of government policies and actions, commended El-Rufai's son for reportedly rejecting a gift of SUVs alongside only one other individual.
During the interview, Sowore pointedly addressed the issue of governance in Nigeria, lamenting what he perceives as a tendency among Nigerians to call upon activists like himself during times of protest, yet consistently electing leaders he deems oppressive.
He specifically criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as an alliance primarily composed of disaffected former members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) who allegedly united to exploit the nation's resources.
Regarding recent controversies surrounding the distribution of SUVs to lawmakers by state governors, Sowore disclosed that only two individuals he was aware of declined to accept the vehicles. Notably, one of these individuals was identified as Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of prominent politician Nasir El-Rufai. Sowore's revelation underscored the rarity of such gestures in Nigerian politics, particularly among Northern politicians.
"In this case, they were Northerners," Sowore remarked during the interview, emphasizing the importance of the refusal by El-Rufai's son. The decision not to accept the luxury vehicles amid widespread public outcry over government spending and accountability issues has garnered praise from some quarters, viewing it as a principled stance against political excess.
