The leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo internationally, Chief Emmanuel Iwanyanwu, expressed his opinions on the rotation of the presidency in Nigeria. He made the observation that, historically, the North and the South have taken turns holding the presidency instead of all six geopolitical zones. Chief Iwanyanwu emphasized that the Southeast region has been disadvantaged by this pattern in the presidential contest, particularly when larger zones band together to obstruct their chances.

Representatives from the Middle Belt and the South came together to talk about rotating the president in response to this problem. Following discussions, they all decided that it was fair and equitable to give the Southeast the President. The goal of this choice was to guarantee that every region had an equal chance to lead the nation. But inside the ruling All Progressives (APC), a candidate from the Southwest surfaced, defying the consensus to give the presidency to someone from the Southeast.

Iwuanyanwu stated in an interview with The Sun, "The presidency is zoned to rotate North and South instead of rotating through six geo-political zones. This has made it impossible for the Southeast to produce a president when two large zones come together to deny the Southeast the opportunity when the presidency was zoned to the South. To this effect, the Southern and Middle Belt met, deliberated and resolved to zone it to the Southeast in their own opinion, justice demanded that it should be zoned to the Southeast; they therefore, zoned it to the Southeast. Later on Southwest candidate emerged in APC being the political party in power."
