In the two years since his election, Kenya's President William Ruto has gained international acclaim for his climate activism, tech engagement, and peacekeeping efforts. However, domestically, Kenyans have faced severe economic hardships, prompting widespread protests and forcing Ruto to abandon planned tax hikes. Ruto's administration, criticized for being aligned with foreign interests and disconnected from the people's needs, now faces increased scrutiny. Despite advocating for global financial reforms and climate action, Ruto's focus on international issues has been perceived as neglecting pressing domestic concerns.
As protests spread, Ruto condemned arsonists who set fire to Parliament Buildings but also called for national dialogue to address key issues like employment and tax policy. Analysts warn that failing to address domestic issues could diminish Ruto's value as a Western ally in Africa. Critics, including prominent activist Boniface Mwangi, argue that international support for Ruto has overlooked Kenya's internal challenges, calling for more robust engagement with the protest movement.
