Dr Akintayo Stephen, a Nigerian author and entrepreneur, has stated that his father was a grassroot politician who played a significant role in the 1993 presidential election as the secretary to the SDP

In an interview with Seun Okinbaloye on Mic On Podcast, Stephen recounted how he witnessed his father invest his life savings and even distribute logistical funds for the election. He said when MKO Abiola was not sworn in as president, their family faced financial hardships. He said they could not afford to pay their house rent and were forced to move to a village without basic amenities like running water and electricity

Stephen said the experience deeply affected his father who struggled to recover from the disappointment

In Stephen's words: "I saw my father bring briefcase full of money and distribute every single Kobo. MKO Abiola didn't get the position after election and we could not renew house rent, this was a room and parlour bedroom. We could not renew the house rent and we moved to a village with no running water or electricity. My dad could not even rise from that experience".
