President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has affirmed that Nigeria needs to enhance its staple crop production through smallholder farmers and that he has declared a state of urgency on food security.

According to Punch, this was said by Tinubu on Thursday at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja at the formation of the 31-member Presidential Economic Coordination Council.

According to President Tinubu, "We’ve had a challenge thrown at us, and all of us will have to be careful."

"In the face of it, we have a change in energy security; we need to work together to include power, oil, and gas to increase our own grid’s electricity. We are determined to do that with your cooperation, collaboration, and recommendation."

"I have declared a state of emergency on food security, and we must increase our staple crops by smallholder farmers; we are going to improve on mechanization."

Tinubu disclosed that on the Sokoto-Badagry route, there are around 36 dams from which Nigeria can draw power, produce more electricity, support agriculture, and develop arable land.

He went on to say, "I believe Bismarck Rewane will be able to make additional suggestions on what we are lacking and what we should do to stabilize this economy."

"The manufacturing stabilization fund, MSMEs too, and other fiscal measures have been narrated."
