Yahaya Bello: NBA Disowns Protest by Lawyers

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) disowned a protest by individuals claiming to be lawyers criticizing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its handling of allegations against former Governor Yahaya Bello. About 500 legal practitioners gathered at the Supreme Court complex, condemning the EFCC's siege on Bello's residence despite a valid court order against it. NBA clarified that the protesters were not lawyers and expressed unfamiliarity with their purported leader, Sylvanus K. Alewu.

Court orders service of EFCC’s charge on ex-Gov Bello’s lawyer

The Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to serve a copy of the charges against former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello on his lawyer. Due to Bello's absence for his arraignment, the court directed his lawyer, Abdulwab Mohammed, to receive the charges on his behalf, in accordance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act. The court emphasized the importance of proper service to vest jurisdiction, stating that decisions made without effective service could be challenged on appeal. Bello is facing a 19-count charge related to money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds.

4,000 displaced as Anambra demolishes illegal structures in Onitsha

Authorities in Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State conducted a demolition of illegal structures and shanties along the River Niger bank near Niger Street, Fegge, Onitsha. The exercise aimed to clear machine houses, stores, and sand beaches used by sand miners and traders. Over 4,000 sand miners and traders were displaced by the demolition, which occurred just a month after a previous demolition affected over 2,300 shops in the same area. Supervised by the Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Emeka Orji, the demolition was conducted with the assistance of the Anambra State Vigilante Service. Orji reiterated the government's determination to reclaim the land and remove illegal structures. As the demolition took place, affected individuals hurriedly removed their equipment and commodities, expressing lamentation over job loss and homelessness. The demolition also sparked agitation among property owners, leading to intervention by vigilante operatives. Numerous properties and businesses, including fuel stations and shops, were affected, resulting in significant displacement of workers and traders.
