Man Utd need to pay £42.4m plus to sign Matthijs de Ligt, Erik ten Hag really wants him

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are poised to make a substantial investment of £42.4 million to acquire Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, as reported by Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The Red Devils are intent on strengthening their central defensive lineup this summer, actively pursuing deals for both Jarrad Branthwaite and De Ligt.

According to Mike Verweij, discussions are ongoing between United and Bayern for De Ligt. Plettenberg indicates Bayern's valuation of the Dutchman stands at a minimum of £42.4 million, with potential additional bonuses.

While Manchester United has yet to formally table a bid, negotiations are facilitated directly between De Ligt's agent, Rafaela Pimenta, and the club in pursuit of reaching an agreement. Manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly keen on securing De Ligt's signature.

De Ligt, who previously played under Ten Hag at Ajax from 2017 to 2019, was recognized for his maturity and leadership qualities, captaining the team as a teenager. Following his stint at Juventus, where his performance varied, he has revitalized his career at Bayern but is now seeking reassurances regarding playing time.

Bayern's recent acquisition of Hiroki Ito from Stuttgart and their pursuit of Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen potentially diminish De Ligt's prospects in Munich. Consequently, he may favor a move to Old Trafford, where he could secure a regular starting role as a right-center-back alongside Lisandro Martinez, with whom he shares a compatible playing style.

United is expected to negotiate the final price, aiming ideally for a base fee of around £35 million supplemented by £5 million in performance-based add-ons.
