Four Nigerian youngsters feature for Celtic in pre-season opener against Ayr

Celtic Football Club's pre-season campaign got underway on Friday night with a match against Ayr United at Somerset Park, according to All Nigeria Soccer. Manager Brendan Rodgers named a youthful squad for the encounter, handing opportunities to four young players of Nigerian descent.

Josh Dede, an 18-year-old fullback, started the game, while goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi, central defender Lenny Agbaire, and midfielder Bosun Lawal all came on in the second half. The match ended 1-1, with both goals scored in the first half.

Bosun Lawal, who impressed Rodgers with his physical attributes and football ability, was particularly notable. The 21-year-old midfielder had a successful loan spell at Fleetwood Town last season, scoring six goals in 42 appearances in League One. He also trained with the Republic of Ireland senior national team in May.

Tobi Oluwayemi, 21, spent time on loan at Austrian club Admira Wacker in 2023-2024, keeping an impressive five clean sheets in nine league matches. Josh Dede and Lenny Agbaire, both 18, represented Celtic B in the Lowland League and played in the UEFA Youth League for the U19s.

The feature of four Nigerian youngsters in Celtic's pre-season opener is a testament to the club's commitment to youth development and diversity.
