36-Year-Old Forgotten Super Eagles' Defender Not Giving Up On National Team Call-Up
Veteran Super Eagles defender Leon Aderemi Balogun has stated his desire to play for Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers once more.
Despite being passed over for recent call-ups, the 36-year-old—who is presently playing for Scottish giants Rangers—has stated his desire to play for Nigeria.
According to Soccernet, German-born Balogun spoke with Brila to clarify his availability for international duty.
“It’s not that I’ve not accepted an invitation ever. Unfortunately, right before the World Cup break, I suffered an injury that was supposed to last a few weeks but didn’t go the way it was supposed to,”
he said. “I have always been available. I’ve never said that I retired from international football, and I think the people who need to know are aware that I’m still very much willing and ambitious to represent the national team,” Balogun added.
Coach Jose Peseiro left Balogun out of the Super Eagles' 2023 AFCON roster, but the player is still confident in his prospects of making the cut under Eric Chelle.
As Nigeria aims to establish itself on the global scene, his expertise, especially in high-pressure situations, might be priceless. In June 2022, during Nigeria's resounding 10-0 triumph over São Tomé and Príncipe, Balogun made his final appearance for the national squad.
The last nineteen minutes of the match were his to play a part in. His subsequent withdrawal from public life has stoked curiosity regarding his potential career abroad. Despite setbacks, Balogun has been an asset to his club.
Rather than recruiting Jonny Evans from Manchester United during the winter transfer window, Rangers decided to keep him due to his plethora of experience. Philippe Clement has made the most of the former Brighton and Hove Albion defender this season.
He has played in 18 games so far, which is the same as previous season, with the exception of one game. Both the goal and the assist are his contributions.
As Nigeria gets ready to face the obstacles of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Balogun's determination and form could lead to him donning the Super Eagles jersey again. The veteran defender is determined to play for his nation again, despite the setbacks he has experienced along the way.
