According to the report from the Vanguard, a professor of Islamic Political Thought and prominent Kano indigene, Umar Labdo attributed the current crisis to political machinations, tracing the roots of the issue back to 2014 when Sanusi was appointed by then-Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso following Sanusi's removal as the Central Bank of Nigeria's Governor by President Goodluck Jonathan.

He explained that Kwakwanso's decision was widely perceived as an attempt to spite Jonathan amidst their political feud.

He further noted the political motivations behind subsequent actions involving Sanusi's position, including his deposition by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and his reinstatement by Governor Kabiru Yusuf.

Expressing concern over the potentially damaging effects of such political maneuvers, he highlighted the deepening divisions within a prominent family and cautioned that the situation could escalate into wider conflicts in Kano, the North, and Nigeria as a whole, given Kano's strategic importance.

He said, "The present crisis is the handwork of politicians. Sanusi was appointed in 2014 during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan by then-Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwakwanso. Many people believed Kwakwanso did that to spite Jonathan, who at the time had a misunderstanding with Sanusi. He sacked Sanusi as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CNB. Kwakwanso wanted to spite the President. That was why he appointed Sanusi as Emir of Kano.

You can see the involvement of politics in the matter. Now, the governor who came after Kwakwanso, Abdullahi Ganduje, deposed Sanusi and appointed Aminu Ado Bayero. That is also politics. Another governor, Kabiru Yusuf, has reinstated Sanusi. Politics is very dirty. It is dividing a prominent family and if care is not taken, it can bring conflict in Kano. And it would be inimical to the development of not only Kano, but also northern Nigeria and the entire country given the position of Kano as a melting pot."
