According to a report by Vanguard on Monday, 1, 07, 2024, The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) inter-agency Joint Task Force (JTF) has apprehended 362 trailers transporting 5,169 passengers on various highways nationwide, according to a statement by FRSC spokesman Olusegun Ogungbemide in Abuja on Monday.

The inter-agency JTF, which includes the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, State Traffic Management Agencies, and transport unions, was inaugurated on March 23, 2024, in Kaduna State. It initially operated in Niger, Bauchi, Taraba, and Kaduna states before expanding to southern corridors known for such practices.

"As of today, the inter-agency JTF has successfully intercepted 362 trailers carrying 5,169 passengers riding on top of goods and animals," Ogungbemide stated. "As part of our operations, we have safely disembarked over 3,530 passengers who were compelled to find alternative transport meant for passengers."

Despite extensive awareness campaigns, many commuters continue to disregard safety guidelines, opting to travel on trailers, he added.

The FRSC has intensified efforts to curb unsafe road practices in recent months, fostering collaborations with transport unions, security agencies, and state traffic management bodies. This approach aims to enforce strict compliance against the use of trailers for passenger transportation.

The Corps Marshal has urged leaders at all levels to support FRSC's efforts in curbing hazardous road behaviors by reinforcing public awareness initiatives.
