According to a report by Premium Times, Sokoto-based Islamic cleric, Murtala Asada, known for his outspoken criticism of terrorism kingpin Bello Turji, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at his residence in the Sokoto metropolis.

According to reports, masked armed men stormed Mr. Asada’s residence on Tuesday night in an attack that was ultimately foiled by the cleric himself.

Witness accounts revealed that one of the attackers scaled the fence of the house and opened the gate to allow his accomplices, who arrived in vehicles, to enter.

Mr. Asada, however, successfully repelled the attackers with gunfire, averting what could have been a fatal encounter.

Musa Lukuwa, a colleague of the cleric, recounted the incident during a Friday congregation, shedding light on the brazen attempt.

"The attackers came fully prepared, but their mission was thwarted by the cleric’s swift action," Lukuwa said.

The assassination attempt has raised concerns about the safety of religious leaders and activists in Sokoto State, especially those who have taken a public stance against terrorism and criminal activities in the region.

Mr. Asada has been vocal in condemning the atrocities committed by terror groups, including the notorious Bello Turji.

His criticisms have reportedly made him a target for those seeking to silence dissenting voices.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

However, community members and colleagues have called for increased security measures to protect individuals at risk of such attacks.

The attempted assassination underscores the growing dangers faced by individuals who challenge terror groups in Nigeria's troubled regions.

Many have urged law enforcement to intensify efforts to bring perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of outspoken critics like Mr. Asada.
