As reported by Premium Time, about 50 members of Nigeria's House of Representatives have come together to appeal directly to President Bola Tinubu for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). They argue that under Section 174 of Nigeria's Constitution, the Attorney General has the authority to intervene in cases of public interest and legal fairness.

"Our main concern is restoring peace in the Southeast," they emphasized. They urged Tinubu to instruct the Attorney General to use his powers under the Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act to end Kanu's trial. They believe this action would promote national unity, address regional grievances, and stimulate economic growth amid current challenges.

The lawmakers' letter, dated June 19, 2024, includes signatures from 44 representatives across various political affiliations. It highlights their bipartisan support for Kanu's release, emphasizing potential benefits for national cohesion and inclusivity.
