Now in his third term as a member of parliament, Ochieng has emerged as one of the most vocal lawmakers in Raila Odinga's home district of Nyanza, the head of the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
In a region where Raila Odinga's ODM was dominant, he defeated all odds in 2022 to win reelection on the Movement of Democracy and Growth (MDG) party banner. Ochieng' quickly aligned himself with the President Ruto axis and joined the Kenya Kwanza administration following his reelection.
However, his unexpected choice to run against Ruto in 2027 suggests that his time at Kenya Kwanza may be limited as he may have to forge an independent route apart from the current alliance. The lawyer, who attended Moi University, is emulating his predecessor James Orengo, who unsuccessfully sought the presidency in 2002 and instead entered the State House campaign.
