According to The Nation, deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu has reaffirmed the principle of equality among members of the parliament, asserting that all legislators are colleagues on equal footing regardless of their political affiliations, economic status, or seniority within the House.
Addressing recent concerns during a plenary session, Kalu emphasized that holding positions such as presiding officer, principal officer, or committee chairman is a privilege granted through the mandate and consensus of the House, rather than implying superiority over other members.
"There is no discrimination in parliament," Kalu declared in response to allegations made by Hon. Cyril Hart, representing Bonny/Degema federal constituency of Rivers State, regarding preferential treatment towards senior members over newcomers. Kalu clarified that seating arrangements influence speaking opportunities and that fairness is maintained across all members, irrespective of their tenure in the House.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu underscored that parliamentary leadership functions as servant-leaders committed to upholding democratic principles. He emphasized their role in providing direction to realize the legislative mandate in the nation's interest, rather than wielding authority over fellow legislators.
"The presiding officers are not bosses to the members but are here to serve," Kalu remarked, highlighting the inclusive leadership approach fostered under the tenure of Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas. He assured that every member's voice would be valued and heard, promising an atmosphere of fairness, justice, and openness within the 10th House of Representatives.
Kalu further elaborated that recognition and opportunities for contribution during debates are based on seating arrangements, not on factors such as age, tribal affiliation, geographical zone, or legislative experience. This stance aims to promote a level playing field where all parliamentarians can actively participate in shaping national policies and decisions.
"Our privileged positions do not elevate us above our colleagues," Kalu asserted, reiterating his commitment to upholding the spirit of equality and fraternity among members. He assured that respect and recognition would be accorded to every legislator, fostering a conducive environment for constructive dialogue and legislative progress.
