Gov Seats Should Be Rotated Among Senatorial Districts, Says TAROL

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Advocacy for Rotational Leadership (TAROL) has called on all registered political parties to adopt the practice of rotating the governorship seat among the three senatorial districts within each state.

According to Daily Trust, this appeal was made during TAROL’s inaugural meeting held on Saturday in Abuja.

Prince Ene Okon, National Coordinator of TAROL, underscored the benefits of rotational leadership in fostering unity and reducing ethnic tensions.

“Rotating the governorship seat among the three senatorial districts of a state will reduce ethnic tension and crisis during elections, promote a sense of belonging, and foster peace, stability, and unity among the people,” Okon stated.

Okon pointed to Cross River State as a model for this practice, highlighting its long-standing tradition of rotating the governorship between the southern, central, and northern senatorial districts.

“Cross River State has an institutionalized arrangement where the governorship rotates from the south to central and to the northern senatorial districts. Even when the PDP, which entrenched the rotation principle in the state, circumvented it during the 2023 gubernatorial race, the majority of the people across political divides who cherish the values of rotation pitched their tent with the ruling APC to ensure that the southern senatorial district is not denied its next turn to produce the governor,” Okon remarked.

The National Coordinator urged other states and political parties to learn from Cross River’s example to ensure fair representation and mitigate ethnic conflicts.

“By adopting rotational leadership, we can create a more inclusive political environment where every district feels represented and valued,” he added.

TAROL’s initiative aims to institutionalize rotational leadership across Nigeria, promoting equitable governance and stability.

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, this advocacy is expected to resonate with political parties and stakeholders, encouraging them to implement rotational governorship to enhance national cohesion.

The call for rotation reflects a broader desire for balanced political representation, seeking to build a political system that prioritizes unity and inclusivity.
