We Must Strengthen Institutions For Democracy To Survive – Atiku

According to Vanguard, former Vice President of Nigeria and Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, emphasized the need for the strengthening of institutions to uphold democracy in Nigeria. Atiku made these remarks during a solidarity visit to Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, at his Abuja residence.

Senator Ningi had been suspended for three months by his colleagues in the Senate over allegations of financial malfeasance, which were perceived to have brought the institution into disrepute.

Atiku revealed that the interest of Nigerians would be better served, and development envisioned if efforts were directed towards strengthening the integrity of government institutions. He highlighted the significance of institutions like the National Assembly, stating that they serve as a reflection of how the masses' interests are preserved and protected in a democracy.

According to Atiku, the agitation for institutional integrity did not emerge recently but dates back to the military era. He cautioned against allowing public institutions, including the National Assembly, to become tools in the hands of oppressive governments.

Atiku's visit aimed to express solidarity with Senator Abdul Ningi and convey a message to those using public office to oppress people that Ningi is not alone in the struggle. Atiku emphasized that Nigerians and the international community stand behind efforts to rid Nigeria of oppressive tendencies among those in positions of authority.

In response, Senator Ningi expressed appreciation to Atiku and his delegation for the visit and for taking a stand in support of the masses. He reiterated the importance of ensuring that the interests of the masses remain paramount, irrespective of the political party in power or individuals holding public office.
