According to Punch Newspaper, Chief Edwin Clark, an elder statesman and National Leader of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, has underscored the need for Nigeria to revisit the agitation for restructuring. He emphasized the importance of addressing the rising tension in Rivers State, particularly the ongoing conflict between Governor Sim Fubara and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. This political unrest has significant implications for the stability of the region and the broader Nigerian political landscape.

In a recent discussion, Chief Clark highlighted the intricate relationship between Wike and Fubara, describing it as akin to that of a father and son. This bond was so strong that it was nearly impossible for outsiders to intervene or influence their dealings. Wike's trust in Fubara was demonstrated when he appointed him as the accountant general of Rivers State, entrusting him with the oversight of the state's finances. This strategic move was intended to ensure financial stability and safeguard the state's resources from external threats.

Chief Clark further elaborated on the challenges Wike faced with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He noted that the EFCC made multiple attempts to arrest Wike, but these efforts were thwarted due to the immunity Wike enjoyed as governor. In response, the EFCC turned its attention to Fubara and other key officials, seeking to hold them accountable. However, Wike's protective measures ensured that these arrests did not occur, demonstrating his influence and control over the state's legal and financial affairs.

The ongoing feud between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike has raised concerns about the potential for escalating violence and political instability in Rivers State. Chief Clark's insights suggest that the roots of this conflict are deeply personal and intertwined with the history of political alliances and betrayals in the region. The tension has prompted calls for a declaration of a state of emergency, reflecting the severity of the situation and the urgent need for resolution.

He said: Exactly so! Wike and (Siminalayi) Fubara were like father and son. Nobody could go and meet them. Wike trusted him so much that he made him accountant general so that he would look after the state’s money. So, that is the thing. Several times the EFCC wanted to arrest Wike but because he enjoyed immunity, they couldn’t. So, they decided to arrest the accountant general and some others. But Wike protected them and prevented the EFCC from going in. I think there is a case in court to that effect.
