Sixteen individuals have been charged in Eldoret court for their alleged involvement in a break-in and theft at the Timba XO club, a nightclub linked to Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi.

The suspects are accused of illegally entering the club during youth-led street protests against the Finance Bill 2024. During the incident, the group is said to have stolen and consumed alcohol worth approximately 78 million Kenyan shillings (over $600,000 USD).

In addition to the theft allegations, the defendants have also been charged with maliciously damaging property worth 80 million shillings (over $650,000 USD) at the same club.

When the suspects were arraigned in court, their lawyers refused to allow them to enter virtual pleas. The court is now set to rule on the issue of bail for the accused.

The charges stem from the unrest that erupted in parts of Kenya in 2024 as citizens protested proposed tax increases outlined in the Finance Bill. The Timba XO club, which is reported to have close ties to MP Sudi, was apparently targeted during these demonstrations.

Local authorities have vowed to prosecute those responsible for the break-in and looting to the fullest extent of the law. The high value of the stolen and damaged property has made this case a significant focus for the Eldoret court system.

This developing story highlights the tensions and violence that can arise when contentious legislation sparks widespread public outcry and protest. The court's handling of bail and sentencing in this case will be closely watched in the region.
